Don’t overthink, start playing before fear paralyzes you. It's absolutely worth checking out, especially on a dark Halloween night. Increase the brightness of your game/screen to reduce the scare factor. It's charming and really, really atmospheric for a Half Life horror mod, even if it's not especially playable due to bizarre level design and a flashlight battery mechanic that makes exploration a chore. Like, there's just straight-up a prop which is just the cover art of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea hanging up in the hospital, seemingly put there for no reason other than that the dev likes that album and thinks it's cool.
I think it's interesting how a lot of the concepts here eventually evolved into enemies and scenarios in Cry of Fear the practice of deliberately speeding up animations to make the creatures twitch and shudder in impossible and unnatural ways is super unsettling and I'm just as fond of it here, the mood and atmosphere it creates is wonderfully edgy in a way CoF would eventually perfect, and just like that game it blatantly wears what inspired it on its sleeve. However, I think that I played it for long enough to get about everything I was going to get out of it for a game that was started when the developer was fucking 12 years old, it's an undeniable accomplishment just super, super ambitious stuff. I wasn't able to get all the way through this eventually I got to the forest, and navigating there is kind of an absolute nightmare, so for now I'm putting it down.
